AMALOWOLowcost Food Initiative

About

A community initiative built around the price of food.

ALFI exists so a household is not shut out of essential food, or of ordinary community life, because money is tight.

Who we are

Not a shop. Not a ministry.

Amalowo Lowcost Food Initiative improves access to affordable food and essential household goods, and uses that work to strengthen the community around it.

Charity can cover a hard week. ALFI also tries to build a repeatable low-cost market: buy better, waste less, and sell selected goods for less when donations and sponsorship make up the difference.

The wider Amalowo identity is carried by navy. On food materials the lead colours are growth green and gold, with white space kept clean.

How can essential food become more affordable while communities, donors, businesses and volunteers all take part?

Why Amalowo exists

The pressure on a household is rarely one thing.

  • Rising food costs
  • Reduced purchasing power
  • Unstable household income
  • Limited access to nutritious food
  • Food waste beside food insecurity
  • High transport costs for shopping
  • Thin access to organised food support
  • Social isolation
  • Youth disengagement
  • Poor access to recreation and wellness
  • Sanitation and water challenges

Our approach

Subsidy, relief, partners, and the community itself.

Lower prices where they can be sustained. Direct food where they cannot. Partners and volunteers so the work is not a one-day distribution.

Mission

To improve access to affordable food and support healthier, stronger and more economically resilient communities.

Vision

A society where no household is excluded from essential food and basic community opportunities because of financial hardship.

Values

What the work has to feel like.

  • Dignity
  • Integrity
  • Transparency
  • Inclusion
  • Compassion
  • Accountability
  • Community
  • Sustainability
  • Shared prosperity

Five pillars

The model, in order.

  1. 01

    Affordable food

Bulk procurement, farmer and supplier relationships, donor support and subsidy where it can be sustained.

  2. 02

    Food relief

Donations, food-bank distributions, emergency packages, sponsored family packages and community feeding.

  3. 03

    Community

The weekend market as a place for engagement, volunteering, sport, education and sanitation awareness.

  4. 04

    Opportunity

Roles for volunteers, traders, farmers, suppliers, community agents, youth and delivery operators.

  5. 05

    Shared prosperity

Individuals, businesses, donors and communities participating in the same affordability problem.

How support moves

From a gift to a household.

  1. 01Donors, sponsors and partners
  2. 02Food, funding and resources
  3. 03ALFI programmes
  4. 04Affordable food, relief and community programmes
  5. 05Households, youth and communities
  6. 06Better food access, wellness, participation and resilience
  7. 07Shared prosperity

The long view

A model that can be repeated, with the books open.

The weekend market shows the work in public. The food bank is the relief mechanism. Donate Food brings goods in. Sponsor a Family keeps support going. Sport gathers people. Water and sanitation deal with basic living conditions. Impact reporting is how the organisation stays trustworthy. Amalowo.com, kept separate, is the route for households who need affordable food beyond the stadium.
